The federal government has put up for sale two private jets in President Muhammadu Buhari’s fleet.
Leadership reports that government has advertised in a national daily the sale of a Falcon 7x and a Hawker 4000.

It reports that the interested buyers were asked to inspect the Falcon at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International, Airport, Abuja, and the Hawker at Cessna Zurich Citation Service Centre, Zurich, Switzerland.

Apparently, the sale is to generate foreign currency as Leadership reports that the office of the national security adviser, which is in charge of the sale, said all bids must be in US dollars.
This confirms a Tweet by presidential spokesman Garba Shehu in September that “There is a govt committee already in place, working to reduce the number of aircraft in the Presidential fleet.”

While the sale of the jets may be welcome development to many Nigerians that called for the reduction of the presidential fleet, prompting Shehu’s tweet, the move could also draw criticisms from Nigerians because it comes smack in the centre of a debate over the propriety of selling of national assets to restart the economy.

The debate has deeply divided Nigerians with some claiming the sale was necessary while others say there was no real rationale for such action even with the recession.
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote and senate president Bukola Saraki were for the sale while the likes of senator Shehu Sani, lawyer Femi Falana, former Central Bank of Nigeria governor Charles Soludo and economist Oby Ezekwesili are against it.
